The Bundesliga season finally gets underway, as reigning champion Bayern Munchen vs Leipzig, who are playing in the first game of a Bundesliga season for the first time ever. Despite winning over half of the 22 historical H2Hs between the pair (W12, D7, L3), Bayern haven’t had it all their own way in recent meetings, winning just two of the last seven (D3, L2).

Bayern Munchen have had quite the summer to contend with, as they jetted off to the USA for the Club World Cup, a campaign which saw them ultimately fall at the quarter-final. Leipzig slumped to their worst-ever Bundesliga finish last season, as a campaign which saw them finish seventh means they’ll be absent from Europe this term for the first time since 2016/17. That could be a blessing in disguise for Leipzig, who finished second in the Bundesliga the last time they had no European commitments. Despite that historical omen potentially being on their side, they’re heavily fancied to make a losing start here, just as they were last season when their first away league game was away to defending champions Bayer Leverkusen and they won 3-2, so don’t write them off.

Bayern Munchen have scored 2+ goals in their last eight Bundesliga games. Bayern Munich have never lost when playing an official season-opening Bundesliga match (W13, D3). Leipzig conceded 2+ goals after half-time in four of their last six Bundesliga matches. Leipzig failed to score in six of their last seven away league games.

Luis Díaz introduced himself to the Bayern Munchen faithful by scoring the decisive goal in their Supercup win, which was interestingly his third successive scoring appearance in which he netted the game’s second goal. New Leipzig signing Yan Diomandé scored his team’s opener in last weekend’s 4-2 win at SV Sandhausen in the first round of DFB-Pokal and all three of his senior club goals have arrived before half-time.

Bayern’s Jamal Musiala faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines, while Leipzig should be nearly at full strength.
