This could prove to be an incredible season for Barcelona, who could yet complete a famous quadruple, as after winning the Spanish Super Cup in January, they’re still battling on three fronts. Although Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis was disappointing, Real Madrid’s defeat meant Barça stretched the gap at the La Liga summit to four points and extended their unbeaten competitive run to 22 games (W18, D4).

Borussia Dortmund stand between Barcelona and a first UEFA Champions League (UCL) semi-final appearance since 2018/19, and with boss Hansi Flick boasting a 100% winning managerial record against Borussia Dortmund (W6), they’re perhaps an ideal opponent. One of those wins came on matchday six of the league phase when Flick’s side won 3-2 in Dortmund, part of a run of eight wins from their last nine UCL games (D1).

While their opponents are battling for a league title, Borussia Dortmund are fighting to simply finish in the top half of the Bundesliga. They’re making a good case to do so having won their last two league games, including a thumping 4-1 victory away to Freiburg, but this game represents an entirely different proposition as Borussia Dortmund have never before beaten Barcelona (D2, L3).

Three wins from their 20 away matches against Spanish opponents in European competition (D5, L12) hardly inspires belief a maiden H2H victory is around the corner. They’ve already been thumped once on Spanish soil this season too, going down 5-2 to Real Madrid in the league phase, but four of their six UCL away games this term ended in victory (L2), so they shouldn’t be written off here.

Players to watch: Raphinha has contributed to 16 goals in ten UCL appearances this season (G11, A5) – only Lionel Messi in 2011/12 has been involved in more in a single edition for Barcelona (19 – G14, A5). Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens could be their best route to goal here, given all five of his UCL goals this term came on the road.

Hot stat: Borussia Dortmund have scored in each of their last 11 UCL away games.
