Atlético Madrid will be aiming to eclipse last season’s UEFA Champions League (UCL) Round of 16 exit by the end of this two-legged tie with Tottenham Hotspur, who are once again experiencing vastly different fortunes domestically and continentally. This is the first H2H since 1962/63 when Spurs beat Atlético 5-1 in the Cup Winners’ Cup final. Atlético’s only win from their last ten UCL games against English clubs was in 2021/22 (D2, L7), whilst Tottenham’s only loss from their last five UCL games against Spanish opposition was in 2018/19 (W2, D2).

Atlético Madrid are into the UCL Round of 16 for the seventh time since 2018/19 and have progressed from this stage in three of their six previous attempts, including two of the three against English opposition during that period. They come into this first leg in excellent short-term form, winning four of their last five games in all competitions (L1) to hold third place in La Liga and move into the final of the Copa del Rey. Atlético are expected to establish an advantage to take into the second leg, having never lost a UCL knockout stage home game under Diego Simeone at either Vicente Calderón (W7, D4) or Metropolitano (W6, D2).

Entering this game in terrible form, Tottenham Hotspur are now just one point above the Premier League relegation zone and five behind where they were after 29 rounds last season in what was then considered a disastrous domestic season. Spurs do at least continue to excel on the continental stage, just as they did in 2024/25 when winning the UEFA Europa League, and won their last three UCL matches to nil to finish fourth in the league phase. It gives Spurs the opportunity to register four consecutive UCL wins and/or clean sheets for the first time in club history, but doing both appears an unlikely prospect on the basis of five consecutive domestic defeats and winning only one away game during the UCL league phase (D2, L1).

Atlético opened the scoring in six of their last seven UCL matches. Seven of Atlético’s last eight competitive games produced over 2.5 goals. Tottenham Hotspur scored in eight of their last nine competitive losses. Tottenham Hotspur didn’t trail at half-time in any UCL game this season (HT: W4, D4).

Ademola Lookman struck in his only UCL start for Atlético, meaning he has now scored in four of his last five competitive appearances of at least 60 minutes (W3, D1). Spurs striker Dominic Solanke has scored in four of his last nine competitive matches, including two UCL victories.

Pablo Barrios was Atlético’s only absentee at the weekend while Tottenham’s lengthy injury list has recently been added to by Djed Spence and Radu Drăgușin.
