Atletico Madrid and Barcelona have become familiar foes in recent weeks, with this clash their third meeting since the end of February. It’s not been a fixture that has treated Atlético too kindly as they’ve won neither of the two recent meetings (D1, L1) and alarmingly conceded four goals in each, although they did score four of their own in the first leg of this Copa del Rey semi-final tie, so this second leg is finely poised.

The 4-2 H2H defeat Atletico Madrid suffered before the international break was particularly damaging as it essentially ended their La Liga title hopes. Now nine points off the title pace in the Spanish top flight, and also out of the Champions League, the Copa del Rey is their only realistic remaining chance of silverware, but a five-match winless run threatens to end those chances too (D1, L4). Having lost a joint-career high 21 managerial games against Barcelona (W6, D12), manager Diego Simeone must fear that Atletico Madrid season will just peter out into insignificance.

Stopping Barcelona would be a fearful task for even the most in-form team at the moment, as the Catalan giants are unbeaten in a whopping 20 games in all competitions (W17, D3). Barcelona have established a three-point lead at the La Liga summit and are still on course to complete a famous quadruple this year, having already won the Spanish Super Cup at the start of 2025.

They’re still battling on three fronts, but a fixture pile-up could prove their undoing as they play every three or four days up until April 22nd, while they’ve already played twice since the international break. The incentive of reaching a first Copa del Rey final since 2020/21 should carry any tired legs here, and three successive away H2H wins suggest they’re good value to reach the final in Seville on April 26th.

Players to watch: Julián Alvarez opened the scoring in the last two H2Hs, but his three prior Copa del Rey scoring appearances before the first leg saw him close the scoring. Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski also scored in the last two H2Hs – his last six club goals arrived on or beyond the hour mark.
