Atlético Madrid and Barcelona will play each other three times in April, with the first of those meetings being in La Liga this Saturday as the visitors look to strengthen their grip on top spot against their fourth-placed hosts. That 4-0 win in February was only Atlético’s third victory in their last seven competitive home H2Hs (L4). Barcelona have won their last three away league trips to the Metropolitano though – the only visiting team to have achieved that in La Liga.
Atlético went into the international break after suffering a 3-2 defeat in the Madrid derby despite leading at half-time, making it 19 points dropped from winning positions for them in La Liga this season. Following on from the 3-2 loss to Tottenham in the UEFA Champions League, albeit inconsequential, the Rojiblancos are now facing the prospect of a third successive defeat, with that outcome potentially ending their hopes of catching third-placed Villarreal, who start this round of fixtures one point ahead of them. Thirteen victories from their last 14 home league games (L1) do at least make Atleti a formidable team at the Metropolitano Stadium though.
Barcelona edged past Rayo Vallecano (1-0) in their last encounter to maintain a four-point lead over Real Madrid after matchday 29. That result extended the Blaugrana’s unbeaten streak to eight games across all competitions (W7, D1) after losing two in a row in mid-February, which included suffering a 4-0 defeat at this venue in the Copa del Rey. Manager Hansi Flick has overseen a run of 26 league matches without a draw (W22, L4), but there is no guarantee of that sequence being extended with a win here, as Barça have fallen to two losses in their last four away trips in La Liga (W2).
A league-high 17 of Atlético’s games stood level at half-time this season (HT: W10, L2). Eight of Atlético’s 15 home league games this term have seen the opener scored inside 15 minutes. No team have scored at least twice more often in La Liga this season than Barcelona (22 times) pre-round. Barcelona have won a league-high 18 points from losing positions this term (W6, L4).
Julián Alvarez scored Atlético’s fourth goal in their 4-0 H2H win earlier this term and got the opener in this corresponding fixture last season (L 4-2). Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski has registered four goal involvements (G2, A2) across his last two league visits to this venue.
Marcos Llorente and Johnny Cardoso are suspended for Atlético, who are sweating over Alexander Sørloth’s fitness following the international break. Raphinha will be missing for Barcelona after suffering an injury on Brazil duty.
