Athletic Club and Villarreal both face an important test of their resolve in this Sunday night match after suffering surprise defeats in the last round. Athletic Bilbao are bidding to avoid defeat in seven successive home H2Hs for the first time ever (W4, D2), while Villarreal are hoping to record their first H2H league double since 2010/11. Athletic Bilbao conceded in each of their last 14 La Liga matches.

With Spain in the box seat to earn a fifth UEFA Champions League (UCL) spot, Athletic Bilbao could still yet secure a third consecutive European campaign if they can overturn their major slump in form. Ernesto Valverde’s men started this matchweek three points behind seventh place despite losing three of their last four league outings without scoring. The sole win in that run did come at San Mamés, where Athletic Bilbao have won three of their last four home league matches (L1), as many wins as they had earned in their previous nine such games prior (D2, L4), but a dismal record against sides starting this round above them in the table (W3, D2, L9) begs the question of which Athletic Bilbao side will turn up here.

Villarreal are closing in on confirming their UCL status for next season, but even that may not be enough to earn manager Marcelino a new deal, with their 1-0 defeat away to Girona in the last round reigniting the debate over whether he should stay on as boss beyond the summer. A swift return to the road can only be viewed as a negative omen for the Yellow Submarine, whose only La Liga away victory across their last seven such outings came at relegation contenders Levante in mid-February (D2, L4), but with a largely positive away record against sides who start this round outside of the top six (W6, D2, L2), they’ve excelled against these kinds of opponents this term.

The home team on the day kept a first-half clean sheet in each of Athletic’s last eight league games. Villarreal conceded exactly once in six of their last seven La Liga victories. The home side on the day led at half-time in nine of Villarreal’s last ten La Liga matches.

Athletic Bilbao captain Iñaki Williams blanked in the reverse H2H but has scored against Villarreal in each of the past three seasons. An Alberto Moleiro goal could be a positive omen for Villarreal, who have won seven of his eight scoring appearances this season (D1), including the previous H2H.

Athletic Bilbao are missing Andoni Gorosabel and Aitor Paredes, whilst Villarreal pair Thomas Partey and Rafa Marín are both doubtful.
