Atalanta will begin a top-flight season under a foreign coach for the first time since 1951/52 as they host Pisa on matchday one of the 2025/26 Serie A campaign. The teams last met in Serie A back in 1990/91. Since then, Atalanta have won both Coppa Italia H2Hs to take place this century without conceding. Atalanta have won each of their last seven Serie A openers by an aggregate score of 21-5. Pisa finished second in Serie B last season to earn a move back to the top-flight after 34 years and two corporate bankruptcies.

For the first time since 2015/16, Atalanta are starting a season without Gian Piero Gasperini in the dugout after his summer departure to Roma. He leaves behind a legacy of ending the club’s 61-year trophy drought with the UEFA Europa League title in 2024, which puts new manager Ivan Jurić under pressure. Jurić was recently a part of Southampton’s disastrous Premier League campaign that ended in relegation, and his task in Bergamo has been made all the more difficult after La Dea lost last term’s Serie A top scorer in Mateo Retegui, while Ademola Lookman’s future remains doubtful, with the duo combining for 40 league goals last season.

Pisa Promotion-winning manager Filippo Inzaghi left the club by mutual consent, providing incoming head coach Alberto Gilardino another shot in Serie A after he was sacked by Genoa in November. The Nerazzurri warmed up with a win over Cesena on penalties last weekend in the first round of Coppa Italia, but facing a club of Atalanta’s stature will be a different ball game.

Atalanta kept just one clean sheet across their last six home league games (W2, D1, L3). None of Pisa’s last five league matches were decided by more than a one-goal margin (W3, D1, L1). Eight of Pisa’s last 12 league matches produced over 2.5 total goals.

A goal from Mario Pašalić could be a good omen for Atalanta as they have won the last nine league games he netted in, with five of his last seven strikes serving as his team’s opening goal. Mattéo Tramoni also boasted a 100% success rate while scoring his 14 club goals last season (W12), with seven being Pisa’s first strike of the game.

Ademola Lookman returned to training but his Atalanta future hangs in the balance. Sead Kolašinac and Mitchel Bakker remain long-term absentees due to injuries. Pisa are set to miss a few regulars such as Tomás Esteves and Mateus Lusuardi.
