Deportivo Alavés secured a potentially significant 1-0 win over Girona last weekend to boost their La Liga survival hopes, but they were still just two points above the relegation zone by the end of the last matchday. Next up is a daunting clash with reigning champions Real Madrid, but Eduardo Coudet’s men can take heart from having lost only one of their last five outings in the Spanish top flight (W2, D2).

That defeat was against another side from the capital (2-0 against Rayo Vallecano) as part of a concerning run of just one win in their last eight La Liga home fixtures (D3, L4). On a more encouraging note, the Basque outfit have raised their game against high-performing opponents this season, only losing one league encounter in that time on their own patch against teams starting this weekend in the top seven (W1, D3).

Real Madrid arrive under pressure, trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by four points ahead of matchday 31 after losing 2-1 to Valencia – their third defeat in their last nine league fixtures (W4, D2) and as many losses as they had suffered in their previous 62 such outings. Manager Carlo Ancelotti felt that the result was “not deserved”, but he could have no such complaints after Tuesday’s collapse at Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League (3-0).

Real Madrid therefore have much to improve on, including their league away form, as victory at Villarreal (2-1) in mid March was their first on the road in La Liga in four matches (D1, L2). Madrid can at least draw strength from their record at Alavés, as they have won on their last four trips there and could become the second visiting side after Osasuna to win at least five top-flight games in a row at Mendizorroza.

Players to watch: Carlos Vicente scored Alavés’ winner against Girona with his fourth La Liga goal of the campaign, with all of them being his side’s first of the match, while three of them came at home. Kylian Mbappé has netted six goals across Real Madrid’s last five league away games, with the last three of those strikes coming before the 25th minute.
