After failing to win their opening UEFA Champions League matches this season, Villarreal and Juventus will be hoping for a fresh start as another failure could complicate their chances. Villarreal eliminated Juventus 4-1 on aggregate in the first play-off round in the UCL back in the 2021/22 edition, despite only drawing the first leg at home, in what are the only two competitive H2Hs. The Yellow Submarine met Italian opposition on matchday two in both previous appearances in this competition, but failed to win each time (D1, L1). Juventus’ last four competitive matches saw both teams score.

A narrow 1-0 defeat against Tottenham earlier this month was Villarreal’s ninth defeat across their last 13 UCL group/league phase matches (W3, D1). Playing at home doesn’t necessarily help the Yellow Submarine as they have won only two of their last 12 UCL matches at Estadio de la Ceramica (D5, L5), with each of those five defeats arriving in the last nine such outings. Villarreal have at least reacted well to that Tottenham defeat by racking up three consecutive league victories, including a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday night when they registered their first clean sheet in six outings.

Despite scoring four goals in a UCL match for the first time since 2021, Juventus failed to win their opening league phase outing against Dortmund (4-4), a game which saw them come from behind three times, including two stoppage time goals. While the Bianconeri have won just once across their last ten UCL away matches (D4, L5), they were unbeaten across their four league phase matches last season (W1, D3), with the sole victory coming on their first away trip in Leipzig (3-2). Juventus are also unbeaten in both their competitive away matches this term (W1, D1), but their 1-1 home draw against Atalanta on Saturday was their third consecutive draw.

Nine of Villarreal’s last 12 UCL home matches produced less than 2.5 goals. Villarreal have won eight home matches in a row, conceding only five goals during the run. Six of Juventus’ last seven away matches produced under 2.5 goals.

Nicolas Pépé has attempted 2+ shots in six of his last seven games in major European competition, with Villarreal winning four of his five overall goalscoring appearances and netting 3+ goals each time. Dušan Vlahović has scored each of his last seven club goals after the break, but he opened the scoring here in the last H2H after only 33 seconds.

Villarreal’s long list of absentees remains unchanged, whilst Juventus haven’t reported any new injuries.
