Two of the bottom three in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) standings in Villarreal and Ajax meet on matchday seven, with both knowing that anything less than a win will result in elimination. This is the first meeting of the sides. Villarreal have won their last four against Dutch opponents, whilst Ajax have lost 12 of their last 15 UCL matches against Spanish teams.

After winning each of their first two games of 2026, Villarreal were dealt a blow last time out when they were beaten 2-0 by Real Betis in La Liga, and now they enter midweek UCL action knowing that anything less than a win here will rule them out of possible qualification past the league phase. Even if they achieve that, results will have to go their way, though an ongoing four-match losing streak in Europe highlights that that may be a pipe dream for the home faithful as they look to avoid losing five on the bounce for the first time since December 2011. To put a halt to that losing streak, the Yellow Submarine need to rediscover their shooting boots and fast, as to this point they’ve failed to score in four of their six UCL outings, the second-most goalless displays in the competition.

Ajax too enter this matchday in torrid UCL form, sitting third-bottom of the league phase standings thanks to a return of five defeats from six fixtures (W1). They did manage to beat Qarabağ last time out in the competition (4-2), though successive winless outings domestically over the past week – including a 6-0 cup defeat – highlight their continued defensive vulnerabilities. That’s been particularly apparent in Europe’s premier continental tournament, as Ajax have conceded the most goals in the UCL this season (18) and remain on their longest ever run without keeping a clean sheet in this competition (11 games).

Villarreal have won just two of their last 15 home UCL matches. Villarreal have scored just one first-half UCL goal this season. Ajax have trailed for longer than any other side in the UCL this season (417 minutes). Ajax have conceded a competition high ten first-half goals in the UCL this season.

Villarreal’s Alberto Moleiro has three goal contributions in his last three matches (G2, A1), whilst seven of his eight goals this term have come after half-time. Six of Oscar Gloukh’s seven goals for Ajax have come away from home with four coming after the 75th minute, including both against Qarabağ in his last UCL outing.

Villarreal’s Pape Gueye is suspended for this one and unlikely to have returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, though Ajax arrive at near full strength.
