Verona won 1-0 at Monza last weekend to move three points clear of the relegation zone, with that victory meaning they remain the only side this season to have emerged victorious each time they have scored first in Serie A (W5). They are now chasing consecutive league wins for the first time since last March, but next face Atalanta, who crushed them 6-1 in the reverse fixture, leaving them winless in five H2Hs (D1, L4).

That result was also a sixth successive defeat against Atalanta for head coach Paolo Zanetti, so revenge could not be sweeter in Verona’s battle for survival. The challenge is to transform his side’s fortunes at home however, as they have taken just one point and found the net only once across the last five games (L4) at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi. With a UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off against Club Brugge on the horizon, there could be potential distractions for the visitors ahead of this encounter.

La Dea will remain third irrespective of results this weekend, but defeat here would cast further doubts about their ability to bridge the current seven-point gap to Serie A leaders Napoli. Being away from Bergamo could work to Atalanta’s advantage though, as they are unbeaten in their last nine league trips (W6, D3), while they have gained five points in that sequence after conceding the match opener, with the latest such example being at Como (2-1) last month.

Players to watch: Verona’s Daniel Mosquera could threaten Atalanta’s record of not having conceded away from home in Serie A after the hour mark this season, as his last four league goals have come in the 75th minute or later, including three at this venue. Marten de Roon by contrast scored a sixth-minute opener in the reverse fixture and has assisted Atalanta’s winner in 1-0 victories on their last two H2H visits.

Hot stat: Going into this weekend, Verona have received more red cards than any side in Serie A this season (seven).
