Tottenham’s injury-riddled squad conceded a late goal to draw 2-2 at home to Wolves and ended the round in the bottom half of the Premier League standings. After left-back Destiny Udogie joined several other first team players in the treatment room, manager Ange Postecoglou said he was even forced to play an unfit Radu Drăgușin against Wolves whilst others were “dipping into their reserves of energy”.

That has been the story of the season as far as Postecoglou is concerned and it has led to the complete disintegration of a once-glowing home record that was the basis of their early season success. They kept in touch with the European placings throughout October by winning seven of their first eight competitive games of 2024/25, but home fans have since celebrated just one triumph from the subsequent seven (D3, L3) following the draw with Wolves.

Newcastle are eight points ahead of Spurs and are now a contender to return to the UEFA Champions League next season after recording just their second Premier League-era victory at Old Trafford (W 2-0). The Maggies are on the charge after picking up three Premier League clean sheets and wins in a ten-day period and are in historically imperious form, with their win away to Manchester United completing their first sequence of four straight top-flight wins ‘to nil’ since 2012.

They must therefore be immensely confident of continuing a favourable recent history against Spurs. Newcastle triumphed in four of their last five meetings with Tottenham under manager Eddie Howe, and whilst the one exception was last season’s Premier League away trip (L 4-1), they’ve still won five of their last ten away league H2Hs (D1, L4). That and their four wins from eight games as travelling favourites this Premier League season (D2, L2) leaves them well-placed here.

Players to watch: Spurs forward Dominic Solanke returned four goal involvements (G3, A1) for Bournemouth against Newcastle last season (W1, D1). Alexander Isak became the third-fastest Newcastle player to accumulate 50 Premier League goal involvements with his strike against United (69 games; G43, A7) and looks set to continue his dominance after scoring in three of his four H2Hs (G5).

Hot stat: Eddie Howe’s six H2Hs as Newcastle boss averaged 4.67 goals per game.
