Tottenham’s focus switches back to the Premier League for the coming weeks after finishing in the top eight of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) along with Manchester City, who are still competing on four fronts. Spurs won the reverse fixture 2-0 back in August, but having won four successive Premier League home H2Hs to nil from 2020-2023, it’s City who’ve won with a clean sheet in the last two games on this ground in this competition. Nine of Tottenham’s last 13 Premier League games saw both teams score.
The pressure on Thomas Frank’s job won’t relent despite what he hailed as the “incredible” achievement of finishing fourth in the UCL during the week, with a 2-0 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt affording them a break from the UCL until the Round of 16 in mid-March. It’s the perfect time for Spurs to give their failing Premier League campaign their undivided attention after another five-game winless run (D3, L2) saw them start this round eight points ahead of the bottom-three and with the league’s second-worst home record (W2, D3, L6). Considering the pre-round top seven account for five of those failures to win too (D1, L4), the visit of City is hardly likely to be a welcomed one.
City manager Pep Guardiola has for weeks been ruing the ever-expanding football calendar and the toll it’s taking on his squad, so he’ll be mightily relieved that their 2-0 win over Galatasaray in midweek was enough to book their spot in the UCL last 16 and avoid a pair of play-off games in February. They need to prioritise this competition for now as they trail leaders Arsenal by four points pre-round, so last weekend’s 2-0 home win over Wolves was timely as it ended a four-match winless league run prior (D3, L1). A mixed bag of away results this term (W5, D2, L4) explain why City have struggled this term, something they need to quickly correct if they’re to seriously challenge Arsenal.
Tottenham led at half-time in only four of their last 21 Premier League games (HT: D8, L9). City opened the scoring in a league-high 18 Premier League games this season. City’s last five Premier League games produced under 2.5 goals.
After making a return from injury during the week, João Palhinha was shown a customary yellow card – he’s been booked in four of his last five Spurs appearances. City’s Omar Marmoush has now won each of his last six goalscoring appearances at club level after he opened the scoring against Wolves.
Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven missed Tottenham’s midweek game with injury. Jérémy Doku sustained an injury in midweek, adding to City’s already long list of absentees.
