There’s plenty on the line in this Friday night clash, with Sunderland looking up at the top six, while Nottingham Forest could put clear daylight between themselves and the bottom three. After winning the reverse fixture 1-0, Sunderland have won six of the last seven H2Hs (L1), with this a first Premier League meeting hosted by the Black Cats in 29 years. Six of Nottingham Forest’s last seven away league matches featured over 2.5 goals.
Sunderland’s first season back in the Premier League has been a roaring success, with another season of top-flight football to come and the possibility of yet finishing in the European places. It will take a strong finish for the Black Cats to realise their European dream, but some solid recent form (W3, D1, L2) at least hints they have a chance to bridge the gap, even if they did lose 4-3 to Aston Villa last weekend. Returning to the Stadium of Light would ordinarily be enough to raise hopes of a response here, but after going unbeaten across their first 12 home league games this season (W7, D5), Sunderland have lost three of their last four such matches (W1).
Survival still hangs in the balance for Nottingham Forest, but after thumping Burnley 4-1 last weekend, a victory here would provisionally move them eight points clear of the bottom three before Tottenham face Wolves on Saturday. Nottingham Forest have hit form at the perfect time on the face of it, with the Tricky Trees now unbeaten in five league matches (W2, D3) and in a Europa League semi-final, but it’s worth noting the last time they beat a side currently outside of the bottom three was way back in January. Three wins from their last six away league matches (D1, L2) should have them believing they can buck that trend here though.
Sunderland’s home matches have averaged a league-low 0.69 first-half goals per game. Sunderland have seen a league-high 17 of their games this season stand level at half-time (HT: W6, L10). Nottingham Forest have scored 13 of their 18 top-flight away goals this season after half-time.
Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor netted his first league goal since October against Aston Villa last weekend, his fourth goal of five this season to arrive on or beyond the 75th minute. Dilane Bakwa is still waiting for his first Nottingham Forest goal, but his impact could be similarly late having netted four of his last five club goals on or beyond the hour mark.
Summer signing Nilson Angulo remains absent for Sunderland. Callum Hudson-Odoi missed Nottingham Forest’s win over Burnley, a game in which Murillo limped off with an injury.
