Two promoted sides that could hardly be experiencing more different campaigns meet in the Monday night Premier League game, with Sunderland looking to get their unlikely European push back on track against struggling Burnley. Burnley won the reverse fixture 2-0, but Sunderland were 1-0 victors in this corresponding fixture last season, one of eight wins they’ve managed across the last 12 home league H2Hs (D3, L1). None of Sunderland’s last ten league games saw the away side on the day score more than once.
Arsenal’s home defeat last weekend means Sunderland are the only Premier League side yet to lose at home this term (W6, D5). They did taste defeat on the road last weekend though as they went down 3-1 against West Ham, stretching their indifferent league run to just one win from their last seven such games (D4, L2). That stutter has seen them drop into the bottom half, and as they start this round five points shy of the top four, any ambitions of making an unlikely tilt at the UEFA Champions League spots are rapidly waning. Sunderland stand a good chance of getting their season back on track here at least, as they haven’t lost back-to-back league games all season, one of just four teams who can boast that feat.
Burnley finished the 2024/25 Championship season a whopping 24 points ahead of Sunderland, but after 23 rounds of Premier League action they’re 18 points worse off than the Black Cats! It’s perhaps little surprise then that Scott Parker’s men are marooned inside the bottom three, starting this round ten points adrift of safety as relegation looms for the third time in as many Premier League campaigns. A 14-match winless league run (D5, L9), stretched by a 2-2 draw against Tottenham last weekend, has almost certainly put paid to their chances of survival, and with avoiding a club-record 19-game winless top-flight stretch from 1890 now high on Parker’s list of priorities, hitting the road seems inopportunely timed for a side who’ve won just once away from home all season (D2, L8).
Sunderland have scored 13 of their 18 home league goals this season after half-time. Burnley failed to score in four of the last five away H2Hs. Nine of Burnley’s last ten away games saw both teams score.
Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey has been proficient in the closing stages this season, netting all five of his goals after the 60th minute. Another man who likes to make a late impact, Jaidon Anthony closed the scoring in the reverse fixture and has netted four of his last six league goals for Burnley after the hour mark.
Injured Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka will again sit this one out, while Burnley still wait for joint-top scorer Zian Flemming to return from injury.
