Stuttgart return to UEFA Champions League (UCL) action on a high after staging a sensational comeback to beat Union Berlin 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Friday night. Boss Sebastian Hoeneß will hope they can leverage the momentum of just their second run of two or more victories in a row across all competitions this season, as they seek to avoid suffering a third consecutive UCL defeat in the same campaign for just the second time ever.

Form in Europe hasn’t been great for the Swabians this season (D1, L3), most recently being thrashed 5-1 by Red Star Belgrade on matchday five. It’s fair to say then that they’ve failed to live up to the promise shown at times in their UCL opener at the Bernabéu against reigning champions Real Madrid (L 3-1), as they sit two points adrift of the qualification places heading into this round.

That might provide some hope to beleaguered opponents Young Boys, who arrive in Germany as one of only three teams to have lost each of their five league phase outings this season. A 6-1 defeat against Atalanta last time out took their goals conceded tally to a whopping 17 – only Slovan Bratislava had a worst defensive record after five UCL matchdays this term.

That hardly prepares them well as they chase a first away win in Europe’s premier club competition since way back in August 1960 (D3, L10)! No clean sheets therein hardly comes as a surprise given their woeful defensive record in this competition, and the Swiss outfit can’t really take much heart from their domestic form as caretaker boss Joël Magnin has won less than half of his 12 matches at the helm (W5, D2, L5).

Players to watch: Nick Woltemade bagged a brace for Stuttgart on Friday and has now seen six of his last seven goals come after half-time. If Young Boys are to come out on top, they may need Joël Monteiro to be on form, as until the defeat to Sion at the weekend, he had won 12 successive games in which he had netted.
