After a painful defeat in the Carabao Cup final, Arsenal turn to a competition they’ve won a record 14 times to try and end their six-year trophy drought as they travel to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-finals. Southampton have won just one of the last seven H2Hs (D2, L4) since beating Arsenal the last time these sides met in the FA Cup in 2021. The Gunners have won just three of their last eight trips to St Mary’s (D2, L3). Just one of Southampton’s last five FA Cup home games saw both teams score.

Southampton have done a superb job of honouring the 50 year anniversary of their one and only FA Cup success, advancing to the quarter-finals with wins over Doncaster, Leicester and most recently Premier League Fulham. The Saints are after another top-flight scalp here to replicate their run to the semi-finals in 2020/21, and though the odds are stacked against them, Tonda Eckert’s men will be full of confidence having pieced together a 14-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W11, D3). That’s put them firmly in the Championship promotion picture, and contains six wins from seven matches at St Mary’s (D1).

Arsenal spent the international break licking their wounds after defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, but have a chance to instantly respond and book another Wembley date here. The Gunners saw 18 players called up to represent their country and a staggering 11 withdraw due to injury, so it remains to be seen what kind of squad Mikel Arteta will be able to choose from here. With Arsenal still fighting on three fronts to end their wait for silverware, they’ll hope to continue a 14-game unbeaten run on their travels (W10, D4), a sequence that features wins over Mansfield and Portsmouth in this competition.

Only two of Southampton’s last 11 competitive home matches were decided by greater than a one-goal margin. Arsenal have kept just one clean sheet in their last six away fixtures. Seven of Arsenal’s ten FA Cup goals this term came before half-time.

Cyle Larin directly contributed to a goal in three of Southampton’s last four games (G2, A1), and was also on target on his FA Cup debut against Leicester in the fourth round. Viktor Gyökeres scored four times in the international break to fire Sweden to the World Cup, while his last six Arsenal strikes came after half-time.

Southampton will hope to have Leo Scienza back, but will be without suspended duo Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes. Arsenal’s most high-profile concerns surround centre-back duo William Saliba and Gabriel, as well as Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice.
