While Rennes boss Bruno Génésio felt his side “deserved a draw” in their midweek European jaunt against Villarreal, his assessment counted for nothing, as his side slumped to a 1-0 defeat. It’s been a hard comedown from the high of a 3-1 Derby Breton win against Nantes last Sunday, and they now return to home soil to take on a PSG side Génésio labelled as one of the “best in Europe”.
Unbeaten in eight home league games (W6, D2), it’s probably a relief for Rennes to swiftly return home, and having done the league double over PSG last season, few could categorically rule out that run extending here. There is one historical omen standing in their way in that sense, as no club since PSG’s Qatari ownership took over in 2011/12 has even won three Ligue 1 games in a row against them.
If PSG’s midweek European performance was anything to go by, then that proud record they hold comes under serious threat here. The Parisians crumbled on Tyneside on Wednesday night, falling to a 4-1 reverse against Newcastle in UEFA Champions League action, as boss Luis Enrique insisted his side paid for the “mistakes” they made amid criticism about the attack-minded 4-2-4 formation he elected for.
Such a defensive ‘disasterclass’ was perhaps something of an anomaly though, as PSG’s three prior games all saw them keep a clean sheet. Shut outs aren’t something they’re accustomed to securing on the road, where attack seems to be the best form of defence, as despite a ten match unbeaten away league run (W7, D3), PSG conceded exactly once in seven of those games.
Players to watch: Rennes’ Benjamin Bourigeaud opened the scoring against Nantes from the penalty spot, his third successive club goal to arrive that way. Three of PSG’s five away league goals this term have been scored by Kylian Mbappé, two of which were game opening penalties.
Hot stat: PSG are the only club not to have conceded a first half away league goal this term.
