The start of 2024 has been a truly miserable time for RB Leipzig, who’ve lost three successive top-flight games for just the second time in their history. A fourth would be unprecedented, but judging by their performance in the 5-2 defeat to Stuttgart, it would hardly be surprising. The Red Bulls’ place in the top-four was the cost of that drubbing, with the in-form Borussia Dortmund usurping Marco Rose’s men in the Champions League places.
Getting their season back on track starts with hosting Union Berlin, but RB Leipzig have lost this fixture on home soil in two consecutive seasons. They’ve also been defeated in back-to-back games at the RB Arena, so the home faithful will be anxious for improvement as they go in search of a first seasonal winning double over Union since 2019/20.
The visitors are improving too, with only Bayern Munich beating Die Eisernen over their last four league games (W2, D1). As a result, Union Berlin enter the round five points clear of the bottom three, while they’ve also overseen a big turnover in playing staff over the course of the January transfer window, with experienced players Sheraldo Becker, Leonardo Bonucci and Kevin Behrens already departing.
Next on manager Nenad Bjelica’s intray is improving his side’s away form, as Union Berlin are winless in their last eight Bundesliga road trips (D1, L7). They’ve failed to score in each of the last five of those, and no side in the division has accumulated fewer points on their travels than the away team’s four.
Players to watch: RB Leipzig wonderkid Benjamin Šeško put Union to the sword in September’s reverse fixture, scoring twice in the final ten minutes en route to a 3-0 victory. The visitors may turn to Benedict Hollerbach for a response, as all three of his Union Berlin goals have arrived after half-time in victories, although they all came at home.
Hot stat: Union Berlin have scored just one away goal after half-time in the Bundesliga this season.
