As they search for their first win of the 2025/26 campaign, Borussia Dortmund’s home opener sees them welcome Union Berlin on matchday two. Borussia Dortmund have won eight of the pair’s 12 Bundesliga H2Hs (L4), including each of the six they have hosted. Union’s 6-0 loss at Signal Iduna Park in February remains their heaviest Bundesliga defeat ever. Out of Borussia Dortmund’s last 17 competitive matches, 14 produced over 2.5 total goals.

Having conceded twice in the final five minutes to draw 3-3 at St Pauli last weekend, Borussia Dortmund dropped points in their opening game of a season for the first time in 11 years. There is certainly no need for panic yet with Niko Kovač’s side now unbeaten in their last nine Bundesliga outings (W7, D2) and former loanee Carney Chukwuemeka boosting the team’s ambitions by signing permanently from Chelsea. Union Berlin defeated Stuttgart 2-1 in their season opener and now boast an impressive record of just one defeat in their last 11 Bundesliga games (W5, D5). That sequence includes five games on the road (W3, D2), and if they avoid defeat on Sunday, Steffan Baumgart’s side will equal a club record of six successive away games in the top flight without defeat. Despite that positive 11-game run Union find themselves on, they have kept just two clean sheets in that period, most recently conceding late against Stuttgart to see another shut-out slip through their fingers.

Borussia Dortmund’s tally of seven red cards in the Bundesliga since the start of last season was the highest of any side at the start of this round. Union Berlin led at half-time in only nine of their last 35 Bundesliga games (HT: D13, L13). No goals were scored within the first ten minutes of any of Union’s 17 away league games last season.

Julian Brandt has now recorded seven goal involvements across his last five Bundesliga appearances for Borussia Dortmund (G3, A4), with four of those coming after the 70th minute.
