The leaders of an eight-team pack all locked on 13 points, anything but a win on matchday eight of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) could prove fatal to PSG and Newcastle’s hopes of qualifying directly to the last 16. Newcastle United avoided defeat in both H2Hs in the 2023/24 UCL (W1, D1), conceding a controversial 98th-minute penalty to draw 1-1 on this ground. Newcastle United have only won one of their nine European away games against French teams (D3, L5). PSG’s last 16 UCL home matches against English teams have produced 54 total goals, with 14 seeing both teams score.

PSG are back on top of Ligue 1 after a 1-0 win at Auxerre on Friday, giving them two extra days’ rest than their opponents ahead of this huge fixture. The UCL holders are out to secure automatic progression to the last 16 – something they didn’t manage last term – and know only a victory will guarantee that. Conceding in the 90th minute to lose 2-1 at Sporting CP last week has put Luis Enrique’s men in this position, but with their backs against the wall, they’ll be glad to be at the Parc des Princes where they’ve been beaten in just two of their last 18 UCL group stage/league phase matches (W13, D3).

Newcastle United arrive in Paris on the back of a disappointing 2-0 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday, a result which leaves them with just one win in five matches inside 90 minutes (D2, L2). That sole success came in the UCL last week as they thrashed PSV (3-0) for a fourth victory in six league phase outings (D1, L1), all of which were accompanied by a clean sheet. The Magpies are already assured of a place in the UCL knockout stages for the first time ever, but avoiding the play-offs looks tricky for Eddie Howe’s side given that they’ve won just three times on the road all season (D5, L6).

Just four of PSG’s 13 competitive home games this season saw both teams score. Newcastle United have conceded a joint-competition low one first-half goal in the league phase. The half-time result has been replicated at full-time in four of Newcastle’s last five games.

Three of Désiré Doué’s six goals this term have come between the 40th minute and half-time, including both strikes in the UCL. Anthony Gordon (G6) needs just one more goal to become Newcastle’s all-time top scorer in the UCL proper, with his strike against PSV last week pulling him level with Alan Shearer.

Nuno Mendes and Fabián Ruiz missed PSG’s last game, while Achraf Hakimi is yet to play since the Africa Cup of Nations final. Joelinton’s knock at the weekend could see his name added to Newcastle’s long absentee list.
