After winning the first leg 3-2 away from home, UEFA Champions League (UCL) holders PSG have one foot in the last 16 ahead of their second leg against fellow Ligue 1 side Monaco. Outside of Ligue 1, Monaco have lost 13 of the last 14 H2Hs (D1), while they’ve won just one of their last ten on PSG soil in any competition (D3, L6). PSG’s last five games featured over 2.5 goals.

Despite going 2-0 down in the first leg, a dominant PSG display saw them battle back with relative ease to bring an advantage back to the capital for this second leg. The Parisians followed that up with a 3-0 success against Metz on Saturday as they moved back to the Ligue 1 summit, and having rested most of their key players in that game, they should come at this clash with a fresh approach. History is stacked in PSG’s favour here too as far as progression, as not only have they won eight of their last ten UCL knockout matches (L2), but they’ve progressed from 17 of 18 ties in major European competition where they’ve won the first leg away from home.

Monaco’s defeat in the first leg ended a 39-game winning streak in major European competition when going 2+ goals ahead, but it was they themselves who overturned a 2-0 deficit at the weekend when they beat Lens 3-2, doing PSG a huge favour in the Ligue 1 title race. That victory showed Monaco are capable of rubbing shoulders with the best teams in France at present, but a 100% elimination rate from seven major European knockout ties in which they lost the first leg at home highlights the enormity of the task at hand here. One win from seven UCL away games (D2, L4) is a further negative omen they’ll have to deal with here.

All four of PSG’s UCL home games this term returned exactly two first-half goals. Five of Monaco’s last six matches featured over 3.5 goals. Monaco conceded at least twice in six of their last seven UCL away games.

All 24 of Désiré Doué’s goals for PSG came in winning causes, with more of them coming against Monaco (three) than against any other side after his first-leg brace. Monaco could look to Simon Adingra for an early goal given six of his last seven at club level arrived before half-time.

Ousmane Dembélé missed PSG’s weekend game after limping off in the first leg, while Monaco’s Aleksandr Golovin will be suspended after his red card last week.
