As Ligue 1 resumes following its winter break this weekend, rivals PSG and Monaco will instead be in Qatar to battle it out for the 2025 Trophée des Champions. The annual match between the reigning Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France victors, or in this case the Ligue 1 runner’s up as PSG won both trophies last season, will see the club from the capital enter as substantial favourites for glory, helped by their 4-2 H2H victory during the two side’s last meeting in December.

Reinforcing their favouritism, PSG have claimed the most titles in the competition’s history, winning 12 in total since 1995 including the last two. Luis Enrique’s side additionally find themselves in solid form of late, winning each of their last four competitive outings since mid-December, while they have not lost any domestic match dating back to last May.

That won’t put Monaco off too much, as they look for revenge against their old foes following that H2H Ligue 1 defeat last month. There’s revenge to be had in this competition specifically too for the Monégasques, who are looking to become the joint-third most decorated outfit in this showpiece event since its mid-90s rebranding, as their last two appearances ended in defeat to PSG in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

Monaco enter this clash in poor form over the past few months, which won’t help their cause here, especially as they’ve now won just two of their last seven competitive fixtures overall (D1, L4). Their leaky defence has been the biggest cause for that, conceding 2+ goals in all four of those defeats which have all come against strong opposition in the form of Benfica, Marseille, Arsenal and PSG themselves.

Players to watch: Against no side in his career has Ousmane Dembélé scored more goals than against Monaco (4), netting a second-half brace during the pair’s league fixture back in December. Monaco’s Eliesse Ben Seghir is enjoying a breakout campaign for his side, scoring seven goals across all competitions – including one in the last H2H – of which five arrived after half-time.

Hot stat: Each of PSG’s last five competitive wins have seen them score on or beyond the 70th minute.
