Two sides who enjoyed successful UEFA Europa League (UEL) trips in midweek meet in the Premier League as Nottingham Forest welcome Aston Villa. Villa are looking to complete a league double over Nottingham Forest for the first time in the Premier League since 1992/93, but they haven’t won at the City Ground since Forest’s return to the top flight (D1, L2).
Despite going a goal down in their UEL quarter-final clash away to Porto on Thursday, Nottingham Forest battled back to grind out a 1-1 draw on Portuguese soil. Vítor Pereira’s side are now unbeaten in four across all competitions (W2, D2) and rediscovering some timely form as they bid to stave off Premier League relegation this term. The Tricky Trees start this round three points clear of the drop zone, but their position looks a whole lot more precarious when accounting for a failure to win any of their last seven league games at the City Ground (D4, L3), while they’ve failed to score in the last three of those games – only once before back in April 1911 have they ever drawn a scoring blank in four successive top-flight home matches.
Aston Villa went one better than their hosts in midweek action, putting Bologna to the sword during a 3-1 victory in Italy as they eye up their second European semi-final in three years. Attention now quickly shifts back to the Premier League as the Villans continue their push for UEFA Champions League (UCL) qualification, and although a return of one win from five in the league (D1, L3) doesn’t make pleasant reading, news that the top five will all get a UCL spot next season has drastically boosted their chances. Aston Villa sit six points clear of sixth pre-round, but their position could look a whole lot more uncomfortable after this weekend if they can’t snap a three-match winless away league run (D1, L2).
Only three of Nottingham Forest’s last 13 competitive home matches saw both teams score. Nottingham Forest’s Premier League home matches have averaged a pre-round joint-league low 2.13 goals per game. Only one of Aston Villa’s last five away league games produced over 2.5 goals. Aston Villa have scored a pre-round league-high 14 Premier League goals from outside the box this season.
Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White has recorded seven goal contributions in the Premier League in 2026 (G6, A1), with seven of his nine goals this term arriving after half-time. Ollie Watkins’ midweek brace contributed to eight of his last nine Aston Villa goals coming in the second half.
Nottingham Forest full-back Nicolò Savona remains sidelined, while Aston Villa’s Jadon Sancho was absent on Thursday and could be out again here.
