Carabao Cup holders Newcastle are looking to bounce back from defeat on derby day when they host an improving Fulham side, with a place in the semi-finals at stake. Newcastle won this fixture 2-1 in the Premier League in October, part of an impressive record over the last 11 H2Hs on their own soil (W6, D3, L2). This will be the first meeting between the sides in this competition since 1981/82. Newcastle boss Howe only boasts more wins against Brighton (11) and Forest (10) than Fulham (W9, L3).

Newcastle’s performance in their 1-0 Wear-Tyne derby defeat by Sunderland was labelled “embarrassing” by captain Bruno Guimarães, so the hosts have plenty to atone for as they return to St James’ Park here. Nothing should stir belief like returning to the competition that served to end their 70-year trophy drought in March, with the Magpies no doubt buoyed by having won 11 successive Carabao Cup games on their own turf. That includes victory over Tottenham in the previous round, and as only Arsenal and Barcelona have beaten Eddie Howe’s side here since September (W9, D1), they’ll rightly enter this as favourites.

They may just be catching Fulham at the wrong time, as they’ve won five of their last eight outings (L3), including back-to-back away victories. The Cottagers’ relegation fears have therefore dissipated, as a 3-2 win over Burnley on Saturday evening moved them to within two points of Newcastle in the Premier League! Marco Silva’s men are chasing their first-ever major domestic trophy here, but they face a challenge as they look for their first set of three successive away victories since March, as Fulham have only once previously gone beyond this stage of this competition, losing out to Liverpool in the semi-finals in 2023/24.

Newcastle have scored exactly twice in seven of their last eight home games. Three of Fulham’s last five Carabao Cup away games went to penalties (W2, L1). Six of Fulham’s last seven competitive away matches saw both teams score.

Guimarães scored a 90th-minute winner in the last H2H, part of a five-goal involvement haul (G2, A3) across eight prior meetings with Fulham (W6, L2). The in-form Harry Wilson is Fulham’s danger man with 11 direct goal contributions in his last eight games for club and country (G7, A4) – four of his five strikes for the Cottagers this season came between the 35th and 65th minute.

Newcastle’s injury issues are focused in defence, with Dan Burn the latest absentee after he was hospitalised due to an issue sustained against Sunderland. Fulham look to be without Ryan Sessegnon.
