Newcastle take to the pitch for the first time in 2026 defending a long unbeaten home record, and are faced with a Crystal Palace side who’ve desperately struggled in recent weeks. Newcastle have been beaten in just one of the last eight Premier League H2Hs (W3, D4), and have kept four successive clean sheets at St James’ Park against Palace (W3, D1). The Magpies have won the last two meetings here by a 9-0 aggregate scoreline. Newcastle have opened the scoring in eight of their nine home league fixtures this term.

Newcastle’s New Year’s resolution will undoubtedly be to find greater consistency in the Premier League, as their last six matches in the competition have produced just two victories (D2, L2), both of which came against relegation-threatened Burnley. The Magpies start the round in the bottom half of the table but with the top six still firmly within reach, and will be confident of at least keeping pace considering that they’re unbeaten in their last ten competitive home games (W8, D2). The Toon Army enjoyed a winning start to 2025, but as their side last kicked off back-to-back calendar years with victories in 2011 and 2012, recent history stands against them here.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner has been desperate for reinforcements to his depleted squad in recent weeks, and his prayers have been answered with the arrival of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur kicking off what he hopes will be a busy month in the transfer window. The travelling fans will be desperate for an injection of energy in their squad who are now winless in four league matches (D1, L3), a run that’s seen them fall off the top-four pace and leaves them just a point ahead of Newcastle. The Eagles were thrashed 4-1 by Leeds on their last league trip, but as they’d conceded just five times in their prior eight away league matches, a return to more dependable defensive form can’t be ruled out here.

Newcastle have scored exactly twice in their last eight home games across all competitions. None of Palace’s last eight away league matches ended level (W5, L3). Only the top two have led more Premier League games at half-time this season than Palace (9).

Yoane Wissa marked his full league debut for Newcastle with a goal against Burnley, meaning he’s been involved in eight goals in as many Premier League starts (G6, A2). Jean-Philippe Mateta ended a seven-game scoring drought with a goal against Fulham that served as his third successive first-half match opener.

Newcastle could welcome Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier back here, while Palace could be without Will Hughes after he was forced off against Fulham.
