After back-to-back top-three finishes in Ligue 1, Monaco aim to make it three in a row as they start their campaign against Le Havre, who avoided relegation by the barest of margins last term. Despite going unbeaten across the last five H2Hs (W2, D3), Monaco have managed just one victory from their last five top-flight games against Le Havre (D3, L1), though that did come in last season’s corresponding fixture (3-1).

Monaco have backed up their third-placed finish with some eye-catching business in the transfer market, recruiting Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati. Even more importantly, they have not lost any of the key players who helped them finish third in Ligue 1 last season. Their summer appears to have set them up well to challenge to finish as ‘the best of the rest’ behind the dominant PSG, and a strong record on the opening day only reinforces that, as Monaco have lost just once across their last ten Ligue 1 season openers (W6, D3).

Le Havre will be expecting to compete at the other end of the table, though they’ll be keen to avoid being dragged into another relegation scrap after they stayed up by just a single point last term. It was a sixth successive top-flight season that saw Le Havre finish in the bottom five, and despite a change of ownership in the summer, limited spending indicates they could well be destined for another season towards the bottom of the table.

Monaco are unbeaten in their last eight Ligue 1 home matches (W7, D1). Monaco have kept four clean sheets in their last five home league games. Le Havre’s last six Ligue 1 matches have seen both teams score. The away team on the day has won five of Le Havre’s last seven league games (D1, L1).

Mika Biereth scored 13 times in 19 games for Monaco last term after arriving in January, the last of which came in a 1-1 draw against Le Havre. Issa Soumaré ended last season encouragingly for Le Havre, but a goal from him may not be the blessing it may seem, as he’s lost on three of his last four scoring club appearances.

Monaco will likely still be without Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati, neither of whom have featured in pre-season, while Le Havre have suffered a blow in the lead-up to the weekend, with talisman Abdoulaye Touré picking up a hamstring injury.
