Manchester City must overturn a three-goal deficit against Real Madrid if they are to progress from the second leg of this UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 clash. Real Madrid have won three of the last four H2Hs (L1) and they’re unbeaten at the 90-minute mark in both of their last two visits to the Etihad Stadium (W1, D1). They’re seeking to knock Manchester City out of the UCL for the third consecutive season and fifth time overall. Four of Manchester City’s last six games saw both teams score.

Manchester City face a monumental task following their 3-0 thrashing in the first leg, and Saturday’s 1-1 Premier League draw with West Ham which saw them lose yet more ground in the title race hardly suggested that a remarkable comeback is on the cards. Even manager Pep Guardiola has admitted he thinks their chances are slim, and he hasn’t guided a side to overturn a first-leg deficit in the UCL to progress since 2014/15, including three consecutive failures with the Cityzens. They have at least won three of their four home UCL fixtures this term (L1), but only one of those was by the three-goal margin they need here just to force extra time.

Real Madrid hammered Elche 4-1 in La Liga on Saturday to keep the pressure on league leaders Barcelona and maintain momentum ahead of this trip. History is firmly in their favour as they’ve progressed from all 35 previous major European ties in which they won the first leg by at least three goals, but alternating between wins and defeats across their last six UCL away games (W3, L3) might be a slight concern for Los Blancos. Two of those defeats were in England, including one by a three-goal margin (3-0 against Arsenal last April), a reminder that they can be vulnerable in this country.

Manchester City have scored 2+ goals in eight successive home fixtures. Four of Real Madrid’s last six games produced exactly three goals. Real Madrid’s UCL away matches this season have produced an average of four goals per game.

Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for Manchester City against West Ham and has only scored more career goals against two sides than he has against Real Madrid (four). Arda Güler struck from inside his own half against Elche and has two goal contributions across Real Madrid’s last three games (G1, A1), as well as four assists in this competition this term, three of which came on the road.

Joško Gvardiol remains absent for Manchester City, who still have concerns over Rico Lewis, while Real Madrid are missing several players including Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, although Kylian Mbappé could return here.
