The destination of the Premier League title could well be decided in this showdown between chasers Manchester City and leaders Arsenal, who boast a six-point lead at the summit. Arsenal may be unbeaten in the last five Premier League H2Hs (W2, D3), but their last victory at the Etihad Stadium came back in 2015 (D3, L7) and they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City in last month’s Carabao Cup final.
Just a day after Arsenal were beaten by Bournemouth, Manchester City fiercely underlined their title credentials by rattling in three second-half goals in a ruthless away victory against Chelsea. Pep Guardiola’s men have been beaten in the league just once since late November (W12, D6) and owing to their game in hand, can realistically put their title destiny back into their own hands with a victory here. This is the latest they’re facing the leaders into a season since 2011/12, when they beat Manchester United before lifting the trophy, while April is their best month under Guardiola, with a 2.51 points per game average including a thumping 4-1 win over Arsenal en route to the title in 2022/23.
Arsenal’s mettle is seriously being tested as they seek to end a 22-year wait for Premier League glory, and while a welcome positive came from progressing to back-to-back UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time ever in midweek, a goalless draw at home to Sporting CP did little to alleviate wider concerns. The Gunners have lost three successive domestic matches, one of which came against Manchester City, and considering their last set of four straight domestic defeats came in March 2018 and included two losses to Manchester City, the omens are firmly against them here. While Manchester City thrive under Guardiola at this stage of the season, Mikel Arteta’s men tend to fold, with their 1.54 points per game under his leadership in April the lowest of any month they’ve played 10+ games in.
Manchester City are unbeaten in 14 home league matches (W11, D3), scoring 2+ goals 12 times therein. Manchester City have scored a league-high 19 goals between the 31st minute and half-time this season. Arsenal haven’t scored more than once in any of their last five games. Arsenal have won just one away game against sides starting this round in the top seven this term (D2, L2).
No Manchester City player has scored more goals than Nico O’Reilly since the start of February (G6), two of which came in their last meeting with Arsenal. Eberechi Eze missed that game but has either scored (G2) or assisted (A1) in his last three appearances against Manchester City.
Manchester City will hope Rúben Dias is fit to return, while Arsenal’s Noni Madueke came off injured on Wednesday.
