After topping the inaugural UEFA Champions League league phase and establishing a comfortable lead atop the Premier League standings, Liverpool go into this week as one of three clubs still participating in both the EFL and FA Cups. To appear in a record-extending 15th League Cup final, they’ll need to overturn a 1-0 deficit to opponents Tottenham Hotspur in this second leg, but a formidable home record suggests they should.

Liverpool are on a 15-game unbeaten run at Anfield across all competitions since a shock mid-September Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest (W13, D2). They put multiple goals past their visitors of the day on every single occasion, scoring two goals nine times and 3+ six times, so on that basis, their attacking unit should be more than capable of overturning the deficit.

Tottenham Hotspur’s defenders may have something to say about that after a somewhat scrappy 2-0 Premier League win away to Brentford. Perhaps most importantly as far as this tie is concerned, that was their fourth clean sheet from their last eight games across all competitions – and a second in succession – with that eight-game period starting with the 1-0 first leg victory at home.

It was a desperately needed victory for head coach Ange Postecoglou, who throughout the season has been pointing to their cup and Europa League success as justification for keeping him in the role. Tottenham Hotspur have also made off-field moves to bolster their defence, and are reportedly attempting to get new defender Kevin Danso a work permit in time to join the squad for this game, so they’re not without hope of defending their one-goal lead and reaching their first EFL Cup final since 2020/21.

Players to watch: 11 of Cody Gakpo’s 15 goals this season were scored at Anfield, including an EFL Cup double against West Ham in the third round. Pape Matar Sarr missed the first leg through suspension, so will be even more determined to make an impact after coming off the bench to score against Brentford – three of his last four goals were in away wins.
