Liverpool will be out to end their Premier League winless run following a comprehensive midweek victory as they host a Newcastle side who trail the Reds by just three points in the race for Europe. Liverpool are unbeaten in 18 Premier League matches against Newcastle (W13, D5) and the last 29 at Anfield (W24, D5), which serves as Newcastle’s joint-longest such winless run against an opponent in their league history. Liverpool have scored a pre-round joint-league high 13 goals beyond the 75th minute this season.

Liverpool finally achieved the blowout win they’ve been desperate for after thrashing Qarabağ 6-0 on Wednesday to progress automatically to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. That was a welcome morale booster as it came on the back of conceding at the death to lose 3-2 to Bournemouth, a result which dropped them out of the top-four and stretched their winless league run to five matches (D4, L1). The Reds last endured a longer league run without a win in the same season in 2002/03, while Arne Slot’s defending champions are at risk of becoming the first Liverpool side to fail to win any of their opening six league fixtures of a calendar year since 1954.

Newcastle were unable to join Liverpool in sailing through to the last 16 in the Champions League, but securing a commendable 1-1 draw away to European champions PSG means Eddie Howe’s men arrive on Merseyside in good spirits. Generating momentum on the back of that result is key for the Magpies, who’ve failed to even score in any of their previous three domestic games (D1, L2). Newcastle have alarmingly blanked in six of their 11 away league games this term (W2, D4, L5), which makes ambitions of closing the pre-round five-point gap to the top-four here appear somewhat fanciful.

The half-time result has been replicated at full-time in nine of Liverpool’s 11 home league games this term. Four of Newcastle’s last five matches featured less than 2.5 goals. The half-time result has been replicated come full-time in nine of Newcastle’s 11 away league games this campaign.

Yet more history beckons for Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who could become the first player in Premier League history to both score and assist ten goals against one opponent (G10, A9). Opposite number Harvey Barnes could be a threat down the stretch with nine of his 12 goals this season coming after half-time, as did his only previous strike against Liverpool.

Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis potentially worsened with Jeremie Frimpong suffering an injury in midweek, while Newcastle’s Joelinton missed their midweek game.
