A fixture usually loaded with Premier League title implications bears a different look this season as faltering defending champions Liverpool host stumbling challengers Manchester City. City’s 3-0 win in November means they could complete their first league double over Liverpool since 1936/37, but a return of just two wins from their last 38 visits to Anfield suggests that wait could extend here (D12, L24). Just one of Liverpool’s Premier League matches this season was won by the side who conceded first.

Liverpool’s drop-off from winning the Premier League last term to top-four hopefuls this campaign has been startling, but Arne Slot’s men looked back to their best when dispatching Qarabağ 6-0 before coming from behind to thrash Newcastle 4-1 to sign off January. That win over the Magpies brought an end to a five-game winless run in the league (D4, L1), and kept the Reds two points adrift of the top-four race heading into this round. Kicking off after the two teams above them means the pressure is likely to be on Liverpool here, but handling that at Anfield looks to be within their means as they’re unbeaten in eight matches there, scoring 18 goals across those five wins (W5, D3).

Manchester City got back to winning ways with a comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle themselves in midweek, which secured their place in the Carabao Cup final. Pep Guardiola’s men were dealt a massive blow to their title aspirations prior to that, as they relinquished a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Tottenham – a fifth failure to win from their last six league games (D4, L1). That sees the Cityzens start the round six points adrift of leaders Arsenal, but they save their best for big occasions like this, given that Manchester City have won five of their last six games when travelling to reigning Premier League champions (L1).

Five of Liverpool’s last six matches produced over 2.5 goals. Manchester City are the only Premier League side in 2026 yet to concede a first-half goal, but are also the only team who haven’t scored in the second half. Manchester City comfortably boast the division’s best first-half record this season (HT: W16, D6, L2).

No player has scored more Premier League goals since the start of December than Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike pre-round (G7), while six of his last seven strikes in any competition came at Anfield. He’ll be tussling with Marc Guéhi, who nearly joined Liverpool in the summer but boasts three wins over the Reds already this season with former club Crystal Palace.

Neither side seem to have any new injuries.
