After winning back-to-back league matches for the first time since early November, Juventus turn their attention back to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) after scraping into the play-off round despite failing to score in their last two UCL outings (D1, L1). Their reward for qualifying is a tie against Dutch Eredivisie leaders PSV, who Juventus beat in their only previous meeting (3-1) earlier this season.
Juventus should therefore be confident of ending their recent goal drought in this competition, not least because Randal Kolo Muani – who became the first player to score five goals in his first three Serie A appearances in the three points for a win era – is available for his first UCL start for the club. Having lost two of their four UCL home matches this term (W2), Juventus are yet to suffer 3+ home defeats during a single UCL campaign, which should only boost confidence they can take a lead back to the Netherlands for the second leg.
Back-to-back UCL victories to end the group stage saw PSV claim two more points than Juventus (W4, D2, L2) while their 3-2 victory over Liverpool meant they were the only side to get the better of the Merseyside outfit in the competition. Since then, they have won only once in their last three matches (D2), including a disappointing 1-1 draw against Willem II on Saturday, despite opening the scoring in all three.
PSV have made it to the knockout stages in Europe in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2006/07, but will be eager to continue their run. In order to achieve that, bettering their away form might be necessary as PSV have won just once across their last five trips (D1, L3), conceding eight times in the last three, albeit that sole victory came in their last such UCL match (3-2 at Red Star).
Players to watch: One of Weston McKennie’s two UCL goals this campaign for Juventus came in the last H2H, with three of his four competitive strikes this term arriving inside the opening 35 minutes. Visiting Johan Bakayoko has scored three goals across the last four matches, including his first-half equaliser against Liverpool, while three of his last four goals arrived before the break.
Hot stat: PSV’s last three matches have seen eight goals scored after the hour mark, whilst Juventus have also scored five of their last six goals in this period.
