Not even Dušan Vlahović’s third missed penalty from his last six attempts could dampen Juventus’ mood after a comfortable 2-0 win at Empoli continued their unbeaten start to the new Serie A (SA) season (W2, D1). Coach Massimiliano Allegri could breathe a sigh of relief after victory, but not for long, after their preparations for this clash were disrupted by news that Paul Pogba had failed a drugs test, prompting the club to suspend the Frenchman.

That shouldn’t put much of a downer on Juventus though, as the last time they had more than their current seven points after the opening three SA rounds was back in 2018/19. The Bianconeri are now looking to make up for the only points they’re dropped so far, which came in a home draw against Bologna (1-1) last time out here, and they should be confident of succeeding as they’ve won four of the last five home competitive H2H meetings with Lazio (D1).

Defeating Lazio this time around won’t necessarily be easy as coach Maurizio Sarri showed once again he knows how to defeat his former employers, after he masterminded a 2-1 win against the defending champions Napoli in the last round to give his side a much needed first SA win of the season (W1, L2). It’s not been quite that simple against Juventus for Sarri, as he has beaten them with Lazio just once (D1, L3) across his last five personal H2Hs.

Yet now seems as good a time as any to change the script, with Lazio fresh off the back of their first back-to-back away wins against Napoli since 1997, while they also won the latest clash with Juventus 2-1 back in April. Curiously, their last away league win here dates back to 2017/18, a season when Lazio also had only three points after the opening three SA matches.

Players to watch: Federico Chiesa has already scored his second SA goal this season, equalling his tally for last term. Coach Allegri said he expects at least 14 strikes from him this campaign. Lazio’s Luis Alberto caught the eye with a back-heel goal against Napoli and he assisted the winning goal in April’s H2H.

Hot stat: Five of the last six H2Hs have seen at least one goal scored in the 31st – 45th minute period, including the last four in a row.
