A narrow 2-1 Coppa Italia win on Thursday couldn’t assuage the hurt of a 5-1 defeat to Serie A (SA) leaders Napoli last Friday which marked the first time since May 1993 that Juventus conceded five goals in a top-flight game. Yet the bombshell of a 15-point deduction crippled the Old Lady further which took the sheen out of coach Massimiliano Allegri’s assertion that “there’s no need to get depressed.” Ironically, Juve remain the best defensive team in SA this season (12 conceded), but that point deduction has shunted them out of European places.
A win here will make it the 12th time since 2004/05 that Juventus have clocked 40 points in the first half of a SA campaign, and five straight home SA wins ‘to nil’ leading into this match provides real hope of achieving that. The Old Lady have, however, found Atalanta a tough nut to crack over the last 11 H2Hs in the league (W2, D7, L2), even failing to beat them at home since March 2018.
Atalanta will be motivated to extend that streak as they look to go unbeaten in six SA H2Hs for only the second time ever. Now that the three-game SA losing streak going into the World Cup break has been replaced by an unbeaten four-game competitive run (W3, D1), Atalanta have the wind in their sails. A 8-2 win over Salernitana last weekend marked their highest score in a top-flight game, and their top-four ambitions received an overnight boost with Juve’s point deduction.
A 5-2 Coppa Italia victory on Thursday highlighted just what great form they are in at present, but positive results haven’t always been forthcoming on recent away trips. Atalanta have won just twice across their last five away outings (D2, L1) which clouds the fact that they have performed better on the road than at home in this league campaign (20 points vs 14).
Players to watch: Federico Chiesa, who scored Juve’s winner on Thursday and had his first SA start in 369 days last round, struck two goals across his last three SA home games against Atalanta. Meanwhile, Ademola Lookman scored a brace on Thursday and is in line to become just the fourth Atalanta player to score at least ten goals after 19 matches of their first top-flight campaign.
