After a two-season absence, Elche return to La Liga and face a tough task on the opening weekend as they host Real Betis. Elche have lost their last two La Liga matches against Betis, and could lose a third in succession for the first time in the competition. Betis have also won their last two top-flight visits to Elche. Elche have not won their opening game in any of their last 11 La Liga seasons (D2, L9), failing to score in the last nine.

Life after relegation was far from straightforward for Elche, who finished 11th in their first season back in the second tier before securing promotion with a second-placed finish in 2024/25. Adapting to life back in La Liga will be a challenge considering that two of their top three league scorers from last term are no longer with the club, but a healthy pre-season consisting of eight friendlies (W4, L4) at least means they should be sharp. Opening their campaign at home should aid their quest for a fast start too given Elche won an impressive 15 of their 21 league matches on their own turf last term (D3, L3).

Real Betis have been the nearly men of La Liga in recent years, finishing in the top seven in each of the previous five campaigns yet never qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. There’s been a big turnover in the playing squad at Manuel Pellegrini’s disposal, yet they remain unable to get a move for Antony off the ground after he was so influential on loan last term. Los Verdiblancos will still be confident of a strong start, as they’re unbeaten on the opening weekend of the last five La Liga seasons (W3, D2).

Elche avoided defeat in their final five La Liga matches of 2022/23 (W2, D3) – they’ve not gone six without a loss in the top-flight since 1977. Real Betis have lost just one of their last 36 La Liga matches against newly-promoted sides (W22, D13). Betis have lost just one of their last seven away league games (W4, D2).

Elche’s Álvaro Rodríguez has been among the goals in pre-season, but managed just two in 22 appearances in La Liga for Getafe last season, both of which served to open the scoring. Cucho Hernández ended the previous campaign with five goals in 11 appearances, two of which came against promoted sides.

Bambo Diaby is a long-term absentee for Elche, while Betis will be without Abde Ezzalzouli and new signing Nelson Deossa, as well as talismanic captain Isco, who has suffered a second leg break in just over a year.
