A travel-sick Newcastle perhaps couldn’t have wished for a better opponent to change their away fortunes against than a Burnley side who haven’t won in over two months. Newcastle have won each of the last seven Premier League H2Hs, including a 2-1 success earlier this month. Burnley have scored exactly once in all seven Premier League H2Hs they’ve hosted (W2, D1, L4).
October 26th was the last time Burnley won a Premier League game, stringing together nine successive winless outings since (D2, L7). Scott Parker’s men can cling to those two avoidances of defeat coming across their last two games as a mercifully small source of inspiration, but Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Everton, in which they didn’t muster a single shot on target, drew the ire of the Turf Moor crowd yet again. Home turf hasn’t provided much solace for the Clarets of late as they’re winless in five here (D1, L4), and with Burnley winning just one of their last eight Premier League games played between Christmas and New Year (D1, L6), they seem unlikely to sign off 2025 on a high note.
Newcastle have had the luxury of 24 hours extra rest for this clash after they were involved in the sole Boxing Day Premier League fixture this season when they went down 1-0 against Manchester United. Despite dominating for large chunks of the game, it was a similar story on the road for Eddie Howe’s men, who have won only one of their last 12 away league games (D4, L7) and now lost six of their last eight road trips in all competitions (W1, D1). Even travelling to promoted teams hasn’t yielded any success for the Toon this season (D1, L1), and having lost six of their last eight away league games in the month of December (W2), Howe’s visit to a side he managed over a decade ago may not be the blessing it seems.
Only one of Burnley’s nine home league games this term produced over 2.5 goals. Newcastle have conceded ten of their 23 league goals this term after the 75th minute. Newcastle have been caught offside a league-low 18 times this season.
Burnley’s Marcus Edwards was handed his first league start of the season against Everton and has opened the scoring on four of his last five scoring club appearances. It was Bruno Guimarães who opened the scoring before half-time when these sides met a few weeks ago, and he also netted prior to the break when Newcastle last visited Turf Moor.
Burnley captain Josh Cullen limped off against Everton and will be absent here. Newcastle remain without as many as six first-team defenders, including the influential Dan Burn.
