It’s been a brutal start to life back in the Premier League for Burnley, who play one of the Premier League’s traditional ‘big six’ for the third time in four matches this season when Liverpool visit Turf Moor. Burnley have lost 14 of their 18 Premier League matches against Liverpool (W2, D2), including each of the last six at Turf Moor. Liverpool have scored in 37 consecutive Premier League matches – their longest run in top-flight history.

Despite the fixture gremlins handing Burnley one of the toughest starts of anyone in the Premier League this season, they’ve managed to post three points from their opening three games (W1, L2). Boss Scott Parker felt a little aggrieved they didn’t have more to show for their efforts after the Clarets went down 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford prior to the international break. The boss ought to hold some hope of seeing his side bounce back by causing an upset at home, where they beat Sunderland 2-0 in their last league outing, as Burnley haven’t lost a competitive home game since May 2024 (W16, D9).

Liverpool have made a 100% winning start to the Premier League season, but the overriding story for them before the international break surrounded Alexander Isak, who completed his long-awaited move to Merseyside on deadline day for a British-record £125m fee. Now that move is settled and the window is closed with Liverpool having spent in the region of £450m, the Reds can focus on winning their opening four Premier League games for only the third time in history. If their last match against a Scott Parker-managed side is anything to go by, they could do so in style, as the Reds beat Parker’s Bournemouth 9-0 in August 2022.

Burnley have lost ten of their last 11 Premier League matches against reigning champions. Eight of the ten goals in Burnley’s Premier League games this season arrived after half-time. Liverpool’s league games this season have witnessed a pre-round league-high ten second-half goals.

When Burnley’s Lyle Foster scores, entertainment usually follows, as his six Premier League scoring appearances (W2, L4) produced an average of 4.8 goals per game. Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah scored in five of his six Premier League appearances against newly-promoted clubs last season, with six of his seven goals across those games arriving after half-time.

Burnley remain without Zeki Amdouni and Jordan Beyer. Jeremie Frimpong missed Liverpool’s last two games, while owing to a lack of match fitness, Alexander Isak may only be on the bench.
