Borussia Dortmund will be looking to keep pace with the top-eight in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) when they host Villarreal, who are winless and quickly slipping out of contention. This will be the first-ever H2H between these sides. Borussia Dortmund won three of their last four UCL home games against Spanish opposition (L1), while Villarreal are winless across their last four UEFA trips to Germany (D3, L1). Borussia Dortmund’s last seven UCL games saw both teams score and over 2.5 goals.

After squandering a two-goal lead against Stuttgart on Saturday (D 3-3), Borussia Dortmund are on a three-game winless run (D2, L1) which was sparked by a disastrous trip to Manchester City (L 4-1) on matchday four. Manager Niko Kovač will therefore be looking for a response when they return to UCL action, and recent history suggests he’ll get one as the Black and Yellows have lost just one of their last 18 home games in this competition (W11, D6) since the start of the 2022/23 season, with the only one to come this season ending in a 4-1 thrashing of Spanish side Athletic Club.

A far cry from their domestic heroics, Villarreal have desperately struggled in this season’s UCL, sitting in the bottom five with just one point from four matches. No game could have been a greater indicator of their struggles in this competition than a 1-0 loss away to Cyprus’ Pafos in their most recent outing, while their other UCL trip this term ended in a defeat to Tottenham by the same scoreline. It’s now four games without a win on the road in the UCL (D1, L3), with all three losses seeing them fail to score.

Borussia Dortmund kept a clean sheet in only one of their last six UCL victories. Villarreal were held scoreless in each of their last seven losses in Europe. Six of Villarreal’s last seven games in all competitions saw only the winning team score.

Felix Nmecha’s last three goals came in the UCL, and with Borussia Dortmund winning ten of his 11 scoring appearances for the club overall (D1), they would certainly welcome another here. Defender Renato Veiga is one of just two Villarreal scorers in this UCL, and he also netted for Portugal during the recent international break – his last three club goals came in European competition.

Borussia Dortmund defender Ramy Bensebaini missed out at the weekend with a back injury, as did Villarreal defender Santiago Mouriño with an ankle problem.
