The final quarter-final berth at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) is up for grabs when Borussia Dortmund take on Monterrey at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, with both teams going unbeaten in their respective group stages. This is the first meeting between these sides, although historically the Europeans have dominated Mexican opposition at the Club World Cup, with teams from Europe going unbeaten in 13 such prior matches (W10, D3).

Borussia Dortmund coasted through Group F (W2, D1) in their maiden Club World Cup appearance, advancing beyond the group stage of a fourth consecutive major UEFA/FIFA tournament. They kept clean sheets against Fluminense and Ulsan HD either side of a thrilling 4-3 win over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns and should therefore be confident of securing a spot in the last eight by continuing their fine form, with their current unbeaten streak now standing at ten matches (W8, D2).

Monterrey saved their best for last en route to finishing second in Group E, as they rounded up proceedings with a 4-0 thumping of Urawa Reds having ground out gutsy draws against both River Plate and Inter Milan. They were the betting underdogs in both those stalemates, meaning that possessing such a tag again here shouldn’t dent their optimism, especially since they have the edge in experience with this being their sixth Club World Cup. Their experience hasn’t always been positive though, as Monterrey have progressed from only two of their previous seven knockout matches at the Club World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund scored at least three goals in seven of their last nine matches. During Niko Kovač’s 23 games in charge of Borussia Dortmund, his team have conceded an average of just 1.17 goals per game. The half-time result was replicated at full-time in Monterrey’s last four fixtures. Monterrey haven’t conceded more than twice in a single game since January.

Borussia Dortmund’s match winner against Ulsan, Daniel Svensson has proven he’s dangerous early on with each of his last six goals coming before half-time. Looking to continue his own impressive streak will be Monterrey’s Nelson Deossa who, after scoring against Urawa Reds, has now won each of the last 12 games he found the net in.

Borussia Dortmund have the busier medical room at the moment, with a host of players including Emre Can and Jamie Gittens set to miss out again, while Monterrey continue on without the services of long-term absentee Carlos Salcedo.
