Manager Edin Terzić was the toast of Borussia Dortmund when he guided them to the top of the Bundesliga by beating Werder Bremen 1-0 on October 20th. However, a shocking couple of months since has left some fans calling for him to be dismissed thanks to just one win across their last seven league fixtures (D3, L3), dropping out of the top four in the process.
Their most recent game was a disappointing 1-1 draw at Augsburg on Saturday, a result that means Dortmund are now without a victory in five games across all competitions (D3, L2), their longest winless streak for almost five years. Results have generally been holding up at home though, so they will probably be pretty happy to return to Westfalenstadion, where they have suffered only two defeats since August 2022 (W22, D7), and recently held PSG to a draw to claim top spot in their Champions League group.
That record may strike fear into visiting Mainz, who are one of only two teams yet to taste success in a Bundesliga away game this season (D5, L3). As if that’s not enough, the 05ers also have a shocking record against Dortmund, winning just two of their last 17 H2Hs (D3, L12), although they can perhaps take some confidence from the fact both those victories came on the road.
They certainly need to rekindle that kind of form, after making it just one win in six games (D3, L2) since Bo Svensson vacated his seat by losing 1-0 to Heidenheim at the weekend. As such, the club are marooned in the relegation zone, but Sporting Director Martin Schmidt believes results will improve under Jan Siewert, pointing to “eight or nine” players missing through injury who “will be the squad reinforcement we need” when they return to fitness.
Key battle: Five of Donyell Malen’s six goals for Borussia Dortmund this season have come after half-time. Looking to thwart him may be Mainz defender Dominik Kohr, although he is winless in his last 11 H2Hs (D5, L6), with his team conceding at least three goals on five occasions.
Hot stat: Only three teams in the Bundesliga have scored fewer than Mainz’s seven away league goals this season.
