It took six matches for Bologna to celebrate their first competitive win of the season as Vincenzo Italiano’s men beat struggling Monza 2-1 in their last Serie A match. Six points after five league matches (W1, D3, L1) is definitely not the start that the UEFA Champions League (UCL) participants would have dreamed of, but it’s a familiar feeling having earned more points within the first five rounds just once since the start of 2020/21.

In fact, Bologna witnessed exactly the same five-game start to their top-flight campaign as they did in 2023/24, in which they secured UCL qualification, but this time around they have both scored and conceded twice as many goals after five rounds. That may be of scant consolation for the home fans, who saw their side score 2+ goals here just once across their last six competitive outings (D6).

The weather-induced postponement of Atalanta’s previous league match didn’t bring them any luck as they suffered a surprising 3-2 defeat to Serie A newcomers Como on Tuesday night. The reigning UEFA Europa League winners have already suffered three top-flight defeats in what has been a miserable Serie A season so far, with only relegation candidates Venezia, Verona and Cagliari suffering as many losses prior to this round.

Manager Gian Piero Gasperini said he saw “players drained of energy” in the loss to Como, which must be a significant concern with such a busy schedule still to come. La Dea have also lost back-to-back away league games for the first time since last December, in which they fell 1-0 to Bologna as part of three consecutive H2H losses across all venues. This may therefore not be the ideal matchup nor venue in which to heal their wounds.

Players to watch: Bologna’s Santiago Castro has registered three goal contributions in his last two Serie A matches (G2, A1), with both his strikes arriving beyond the 75th minute. He may not be quite as prolific, but Davide Zappacosta’s goal against Como was his fifth consecutive strike for Atalanta to arrive in a match that saw at least four goals scored (W4, L1).

Hot streak: None of the last 14 H2Hs saw both teams score before half-time.
