The only way Bayern Munchen can avoid a first trophyless season since 2011/12 is by winning the UEFA Champions League (UCL), and to do so they must get past old rivals Real Madrid in what has the makings of a blockbuster of a semi-final. No fixture has ever been played more often in UCL/European Cup history with 24 of their 26 meetings (Bayern: W11, D3, L12) coming in the knockout stages.

Despite Bayern Munchen recent dominance of German football, they’ve struggled against Real Madrid and haven’t won any of the last seven H2Hs (D1, L6), a run that includes three straight home H2H defeats while conceding at least twice. Instead, they’ll seek to draw inspiration from going unbeaten across European home games since losing to PSG in April 2021 (W12, D3), culminating in three consecutive clean sheets (W2, D1).

Real Madrid were able to bench some star players for Friday night’s 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, so manager Carlo Ancelotti returns to one of his former clubs with fewer fitness and injury concerns than opposite number Thomas Tuchel. On a ten-match UCL unbeaten run (W8, D2) after their epic penalty shootout win over Manchester City in the quarter-finals, Real Madrid are now the bookmakers’ favourites to win the tournament.

That’s unsurprising given the runaway La Liga leaders have won five consecutive UCL away games, but it’s worth noting that aside from Man City, the only other side to have beaten Real Madrid in a European road fixture since February 2022 was German outfit RB Leipzig. However, they might be more encouraged by those three H2H wins in Munich, and two victories in Germany already this season against Union Berlin (3-2) and Leipzig (1-0).

Players to watch: Harry Kane has scored three times across Bayern Munchen last three UCL fixtures, twice between the 30th and 40th minute, but Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior could threaten even earlier as three of his last four goals arrived before the 25th minute.

Hot stat: Ancelotti boasts an unbeaten record against Bayern Munchen while managing AC Milan and Real Madrid (W6, D2), winning each of the last three of those H2Hs ‘to nil’.
