The DFL-Supercup is back to serve as a preview of the best Germany has to offer ahead of the Bundesliga’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The 11-time consecutive champions Bayern Munich will play host for the showpiece event against the DFB-Pokal holders and third-place finishers last season, RB Leipzig.
Bayern are the most decorated Supercup side with ten titles, but given they’ve competed in all but one edition since its reintroduction in 2010 (W8, L4), that perhaps comes as no real surprise. As if they needed even more firepower after netting a combined eight goals against Liverpool and Monaco in pre-season action, Bayern Munich’s pursuit of England’s all-time top-scorer Harry Kane has dominated the headlines in the build up.
Revenge will be the first thing on the minds of RB Leipzig after losing 5-3 to Bayern at home in last season’s Supercup and they simply cannot be underestimated after finishing just five points adrift of the champions last term. In fact, the Red Bulls have since won 3-1 at this venue in the league, although six of their seven goals against Bayern last season were scored by now departed players including Bayern’s new midfielder, Konrad Laimer.
Speaking of departures, Leipzig have brought in around €200m from the sales of Christopher Nkunku, Joško Gvardiol, and Dominik Szoboszlai alone, although they have quickly reinvested funds in new signings. The new boys will have to gel quickly if they’re to topple the irresistible force of Bayern, an outcome they may be quietly confident about having scored 16 goals across their final three pre-season matches.
Players to watch: It was Serge Gnabry who scored the decisive fourth goal against Leipzig in the 2022 edition, and he will be eager to notch what would be a ninth goal contribution against these opponents (G6, A2). Watch out for Leipzig’s big summer signing up top, €43m man Loïs Openda, who helped Lens to their first UEFA Champions League group stage since 2002/03 with 21 Ligue 1 goals last season.
Hot stat: All but one of the last six Supercups produced over 3.5 total goals within regulation time.
