Urs Fischer takes charge of his first Bundesliga match in charge of bottom-of-the-table Mainz, and is handed the hardest fixture possible as he takes his side to challenge Bayern Munich. Mainz handed Bayern one of their two Bundesliga losses under Kompany, but they’ve left the Allianz Arena empty-handed on their last eight league visits. The team starting the day bottom of the Bundesliga has only won away at the leaders twice in competition history (D7, L37), and not since August 1996. Bayern have scored 2+ goals in a new competition record 21 successive Bundesliga matches.

Bayern reminded the rest of the Bundesliga of their strength when they travelled to Stuttgart – who were yet to drop a league point at home this term – and romped to a 5-0 win. Vincent Kompany’s men followed that up with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, setting them up perfectly to at least preserve their pre-round eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga. Bayern boast a joint-record 37 points at this stage and are unbeaten in 22 league matches (W18, D4), and their grip is unlikely to loosen here as they’ve won 12 successive competitive home games – a run that started by beating Mainz – scoring 3+ goals ten times therein.

Mainz held on for a 1-1 UEFA Conference League draw against Lech Poznań after being reduced to ten men in Fischer’s dugout debut on Thursday, but his primary focus is to steer the 05ers to Bundesliga safety. A nine-match winless league run (D2, L7) has helped make this Mainz’s joint-worst start to a Bundesliga season, and having lost four successive away league games, damage control may be the order of the day here. That’s particularly true of Fischer, who has faced Bayern more than any other side without winning (D3, L7), while he lost each of his last nine Bundesliga matches in charge of Union Berlin.

Five of the last six Bayern-held H2Hs saw both teams score. Mainz have conceded a pre-round joint-league high six times in the opening 15 minutes. Mainz are without a clean sheet in a club-record 24 successive Bundesliga games.

Bayern’s all-time Bundesliga record 49-goal haul at this stage owes much to Harry Kane’s exploits (G17), with three of those coming off the bench against Stuttgart for his tenth hat-trick in the competition – only four players have more. Sota Kawasaki netted his first goal for Mainz on Thursday, meaning he’s broken the deadlock in three of his last four club scoring appearances.

Luis Díaz misses out through suspension for Bayern, as does Paul Nebel for Mainz, who also lost Silvan Widmer to injury in midweek.
