The world’s sixth-richest football club according to Forbes will face fully amateur opposition when two-time FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) winners Bayern Munchen (2013, 2020) meet regular Oceanian entrants Auckland City in Cincinnati in the second game of the new expanded tournament. It will be an immense honour for Auckland City’s players to share the field with Bayern Munchen’s superstars, not least because none of them get paid to play beyond a weekly US$90 allowance for basic expenses.

Bayern Munchen qualified in December 2023 by virtue of their UEFA ranking, and the German champions are worthy competitors in the CWC after advancing to the quarter-finals or beyond in five consecutive UEFA Champions Leagues since their last CWC appearance. The Bavarian side journey across the Atlantic having just regained the Bundesliga title, and they closed out their campaign in fine form too, winning four of their last five games, so they should enter this revamped tournament on a high.

Not to be confused with the fully professional Auckland FC in Australia’s A-League, Auckland City are by far the most successful Oceanian club in history, having won 11 of the last 13 OFC Champions Leagues. They hold the record for most CWC appearances (this will be their 13th), but with only three wins from 17 matches on this stage (D2, L12), they tend to struggle against elite opposition.

This will be a first-ever meeting between Bayern Munchen and Auckland City. Owing to typically always being eliminated before the entry of the European representative in previous CWCs, Auckland City have never met a UEFA side before. Bayern Munchen have also never played a side from New Zealand. Bayern Munich’s last 30 goals in all competitions, 21 were scored after half-time.

Bayern Munchen won a joint-high 13 domestic league games by 3+ goals across Europe’s traditional top-five leagues. Auckland City lost each of their last five historical CWC matches, failing to score in four of them. Auckland’s heaviest defeat at a CWC is 3-0 (four occasions). Harry Kane moved to Bayern to win trophies and has been a pivotal part of their success with 38 competitive goals in 2024/25, winning 23 of his 25 scoring appearances. Auckland City’s Ryan de Vries has played in five separate CWCs, even scoring in a third-place play-off against Cruz Azul in 2014, while he also netted in a warm-up game against MLS league leaders Philadelphia Union.

Bayern Munchen’s Jamal Musiala is back in training and on track to recover for the tournament, though it wouldn’t surprise if he misses this game to be eased back in cautiously. The same goes for fellow returning star Dayot Upamecano.
