Bayer Leverkusen’s last outing in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) was one to forget as they were thumped 4-0 at Anfield by a merciless Liverpool, a result which marked the reigning Bundesliga champions’ joint-heaviest UCL defeat since November 2013! Die Werkself will take comfort in that defeat being somewhat of an anomaly, since it was just their third loss in their past 24 European games (W15, D6).

Xabi Alonso’s men will be keen on getting back on track on the continental circuit as they did domestically at the weekend, when they hammered Heidenheim 5-2 at the BayArena, adding to their confidence after winning six of their last seven home European matches (D1). They now prepare to face Salzburg in the hope of solidifying a spot in the UCL knockout stages for the first time since 2016/17, and continuing their unbeaten record against Austrian sides will go a long way in that endeavour (W3, D2).

Salzburg will be out to prove they’re different from previous Austrian sides in what will be the first encounter between the two clubs. They’ll be looking to leverage their vast experience in facing German clubs in their 21st such match (W6, D5, L9), but having won just one of their last eight ties against Bundesliga sides might plant a seed of doubt in their minds (D2 L5).

Salzburg proved they are of European pedigree with a 3-1 win over Feyenoord in their last UCL outing, a much needed win after starting this UCL campaign with three defeats all ‘to-nil’. The joy of that victory would’ve been short-lived for Pepijn Lijnders and his troops, who have regressed with back-to-back losses in the Austrian Bundesliga since, in what is the first time they’ve lost successive league games since the start of the 2015/16 season.

Players to watch: Patrik Schick was Leverkusen’s hat trick hero at the weekend, adding to six of his seven goals this season coming at home. Karim Konaté was the shining light for Salzburg with two goals against Feyenoord, and they’ll be hoping he can find the net once again since they’ve won the last eight games he’s scored in.
