Since suffering just a second La Liga (LL) defeat of the season, it’s been a stellar week for Atlético Madrid, who secured a crushing 6-0 victory over Celtic in the UEFA Champions League before tying manager Diego Simeone down to a new contract. A driving factor behind that decision has been a dramatic change in style, as Atlético have transformed into great entertainers this term, rattling in 38 goals across their 15 matches in all competitions.
The Mattress Makers appear invincible on their own turf at present, winning 14 consecutive LL home matches, equalling their longest such run this century. They’ll likely need to rely on their attacking prowess to extend that run further as they’ve kept a clean sheet in just one of their last ten league matches at the Civitas Metropolitano.
That’s something Villarreal will be keen to take advantage of given that they’re unbeaten on their last three visits to Atlético (W1, D2), and across the last four H2Hs at any venue (W1, D3). That may be where the visiting fans’ confidence ends however, as the Yellow Submarine enter the round in the bottom half and just five points clear of the drop zone after their worst 12-game start to a season since 2018/19.

Pacheta’s replacement will be their third coach already this season and he’ll have a big job on his hands to turn things around. At least Villarreal come into this game on a five-match unbeaten streak in away matches (W3, D2), as they look to record their first back-to-back wins at Atlético in history after last season’s success at the Metropolitano.
Players to watch: Atlético frontman Álvaro Morata has been on fire since the last international break, directly contributing to six goals in five matches (G5, A1). Compatriot Gerard Moreno has been equally important for Villarreal of late, scoring five times in his last four LL games.
