Third-placed Atlético Madrid could solidify their spot in the top four when they host fellow UEFA Champions League qualification hopefuls Real Betis on Sunday. Atlético have won eight of the last ten H2Hs (D1, L1), while Betis have lost each of their last seven top-flight away H2Hs – their worst-ever such run in this fixture. Atlético are the only La Liga side yet to trail a game at half-time this term (HT: W8, D14).

After Atlético thrashed Betis 5-0 in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday to get February off to a great start, they already have the psychological edge for this clash. January ended with just one victory in four games across all competitions (D2, L1) for Diego Simeone’s men, so they still have plenty to prove here to show they’ve truly turned a corner. Such a slump has seen them fall well off the title pace, and although closing a double-figure point gap to the summit is likely to be a bridge too far for Los Rojiblancos, securing an 11th straight top-flight victory on their own turf for only the second time ever in a single campaign could serve as a nice consolation prize.

Betis find themselves in fifth place pre-round, and after their demoralising cup loss to Atlético in midweek, they travel to the capital with revenge on their minds. A league-high seven away league draws this season (W2, L2) certainly haven’t helped their top-four bid this term, nor do they hint at exacting revenge here, particularly given that Betis’ last win on the road in La Liga came in November (D2, L2). Defeat against Alavés in their last such outing leaves them on the brink of falling to back-to-back away league defeats for the first time since December 2024.

Atlético have dropped a pre-round league-high 16 points from winning positions this season. Betis have scored 11 of their 14 away league goals this campaign after the break. Twelve of the last 15 goals in Betis’ La Liga matches came after half-time.

Ademola Lookman’s Atlético career began brilliantly on Thursday as he scored their third against Betis, which was his sixth consecutive goal at club level to arrive before the hour mark. Pablo Fornals got Betis’ winner against Valencia (2-1) in La Liga last Sunday – the fifth successive time that he has been on the winning side when finding the net.

Atlético midfielder Pablo Barrios went off injured in midweek, while Betis don’t seem to have any fresh absentees.
