A 1-0 victory over Hellas Verona was the fourth clean-sheet win for Atalanta in their last five outings (L1), including the last three in a row. Twelve points from their opening six Serie A (SA) matches has confirmed La Dea as a top-four candidate, despite manager Gian Piero Gasperini not being happy with the way his side have performed so far.
However, as all three home competitive encounters this term have seen his team win ‘to nil’, the Gewiss Stadium finally seems to have become a much-needed fortress after Atalanta picked up 17 points fewer here than on the road across the previous two SA seasons combined. The arrival of Juventus should be a good test of this upturn in fortunes, as Atalanta have won only one of the last 18 home league H2Hs (D5, L12).
It was far from a thrilling performance by Juve against Lecce on Tuesday as the Bianconeri were jeered off the pitch at half-time, but they ultimately secured a narrow 1-0 victory. Despite getting the response to the defeat at Sassuolo that he wanted, manager Max Allegri still wasn’t overly content with his side’s performance and even stormed down the tunnel before the full-time whistle was blown.
Juve’s start must certainly have him feeling content though, as the last time they had 13+ points at this stage was back in 2019/20 – their most recent title-winning season. The visitors will be keen to show their latest away defeat (4-2 vs Sassuolo) was only a blip as they’d won three away matches ‘to nil’ before – something they managed to do here back in May (2-0).
Players to watch: Teun Koopmeiners has opened the scoring inside 20 minutes in two of Atalanta’s last three SA games, with La Dea losing just once in his 11 goalscoring appearances for the club (W10). Since the start of last term, Adrien Rabiot has contributed to 19 goals for Juventus in all competitions (G12, A7) – the most among all SA midfielders.
Hot stat: Atalanta have opened the scoring in six of their seven competitive matches this campaign.
